PARALLAX - RAPPER + PRODUCER - PORTSMOUTH

WHY PORTSMOUTH
Well, we were thinking about going back to my hometown of Winchester, then we thought maybe we should pick a random town by the coast and we ended up just choosing Portsmouth because its close to where I'm from, on the coast and away from London.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW

Its been a long road, I started out quite young I was in a rap duo with a friend back home when I was around 16. We made a few tunes that never got released, we did a couple of shows, college parties and shit which is when I started trying to take it seriously. I moved to London shortly after that and I started going out and about to all of the events and got involved in production and the Cypher rap scene and started performing out live the music I was making. That got me onto a few channels so I started to release my own stuff and then at that point I started gathering a bit of a name and a buzz.

From there I linked with some friends that were also on the come up making films and we started making a couple of videos. By that point it was all out and that led to me touring around the UK supporting names like Dead Prez, Lord Finesse and eventually Ghost Face Killah. I was doing shows in Europe and Asia and then more recently doing stuff out in LA working with artists like Dilated Peoples, its hard for me to consolidate the whole journey but those are the highlights!

WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN LA WITH DIALATED PEOPLES?

I shot a video out there with Rakaa. Chilled there for a week and went to there headline show too which was crazy. Mad a dope time and achievement in my carrear. Then I recently went back and did a big show out there supporting Necro and Madchild... shouts to Undergroundhiphopblog they are doing big things in LA.

HOW DID THAT LINK COME ABOUT?

I had an early freestyle that I put up on Youtube before I had any videos or projects, it was a freestyle in my kitchen back in the day haha, it was a good freestyle to be fair, but it was the first proper thing that I put out to the camera. I think I was just sending it about to people and I must have emailed Ruka and randomly he must have got back to me and he rated it -

I was like “wow, maybe there is a chance that we could build off this”. Then I just kept the link there over the years and kept sending him bits, then when the time was right and they were coming to the UK on a tour I just hit him up. I had everything laid out, like you know this is the idea and stuff and then yeah, things just materialised, and we recorded in London when they were on a tour here. The year after we went and shot a video in London and LA and then following on from that last year we performed the track together in LA, so it was quite a nice full circle really.

WHO WOULD YOU SAY YOUR INFLUENCES ARE?

Yeah I mean, obviously Dialated Peoples - they were a big influence for me coming up with my earlier projects, but yeah it was like the typical things like Dr Dre 2001 when I was a kid and 2pacs tapes and Cds and Nas. Then I got into the UK scene through people like Klashnekoff and Jehst and that kind of made me realise UK rappers are actually sick. Before that it was all American, UK wasn’t really established and widely accepeted at the time but they defo paved the way. It allowed me to have confidence in myself, like these guys are basically from the same place as I’m from, there not from the states there from near me! Like one-hour train journey and these people are really on that level of people that I rated in the States. I also cant miss out that I definitely really respected the grime influence on the scene because I feel like they, although I was more into UK hip hop when I was younger, were the big UK rappers in my eyes, they were the guys that really took the sound to the next level and took it global and also you know paved the way for commercial success.

WHAT NEXT FOR PARALLAX?

The last year and a half I have just been working loads on different tempos, more upbeat tempos like 140 bpm like kinda grime influences, trap influences, drum and bass influences, mixed with hip hop, Im creating my own new kind of sound. I would say Parallax 2.0 is me just showing you this new level of my sound which is just up beat, heavily lyrical, but with much more energy in the beats, stuff to destroy the shows but still give you that lyrical depth. I’m trying to be the person that bridges classic hip hop sound with the new hip hop sound. I’m going to try and blend in things like where I can take the trap beats and mix it in with 10,000 hours of hip hop style perfection that I’v put in hahaha that’s where im going. Going to release a catalogue of stuff that’s gonna smash the shows, tours and get the mosh pits going.
